Elastec/American Marine Completes Oil Spill Exercise With United States Coast Guard

Elastec/American Marine recently worked in co-operation with the United States Coast Guard to test equipment used in oil spill clean up operations. The exercise, held near Galveston, Texas, in the Gulf of Mexico, featured a Coast Guard command center, ships, helicopters, patented Elastec/American Marine equipment and observers from around the world.
The purpose of the Coast Guard exercise was to investigate in-situ burning as a response tool for oil spill incidents at sea. In-situ burning involves gathering spilled oil and eliminating the oil by burning before it invades environmentally sensitive areas. A specialized piece of equipment called 'fire boom' is required to successfully collect and burn oil at sea. Elastec/American Marine, is one of the few companies in the world who manufacture fire boom. The Coast Guard deployed, tested and retrieved Elastec's fire boom following a simulated oil spill response scenario written by the US Coast Guard Research and Development Center.
From their command center, approximately thirty members of the Coast Guard controlled movements of the ships and helicopters. Using the latest in communications technology,
officers in the command center were in constant contact with the various craft that were simulating a 'real life' spill situation. Line drawings projectedonto wall screens tracked the movements of each vessel and aircraft during the operation. From one of the helicopters, a continuous video monitoring system relayed real time images of the exercise to another screen in the command center. Control officers had visual contact with vessels under their command. A tele-conference was held between Galveston and seven other locations across the United States.
During the exercise, simulated oil was collected inside the Elastec fire boom. In this case oranges were used to simulate oil because their behavior and drift patterns in water are much like crude oil. The simulated oil was 'set alight' by fire dropped from a helicopter equipped with an apparatus designed to drop a burning napalm-like substance into the collected 'oil'.
Elastec's role in the exercise was to monitor the deployment, handling and retrieval of their fire boom. Elastec/American Marine developed fire boom after several years of research and development. Called Hydro-Fire Boom, the Elastec/American Marine product is covered with a special fabric through
which water is continually pumped to keep the boom cool in the presence of the intense heat and flames generated by burning crude oil. The boom is not damaged by fire and therefore can be reused. Hydro-Fire
Boom is an inflatable boom that is stored on a reel for deployment and retrieval.
During the 4 day exercise, Elastec/ American Marine entertained observers from around the world. Included in the list of 28 Elastec guests was a Commander from the Portuguese Navy and Naval officers from Mexico and South America. Other observers traveled from as far away as Angola and Sweden. An observation vessel was chartered so guests could have a close up view of the Elastec equipment at work. The exercise was an outstanding success for Elastec/American Marine. The US Coast Guard currently leases a Hydro-Fire Boom system and other response entities have ordered Hydro-Fire Boom systems since the exercise was completed.
Elastec/American Marine continues to develop new technologies and market products around the world. Currently, Elastec/American Marine equipment is used in over forty countries.

KS Low visits Elastec/American Marine
Kwee Sun Low from InteRelated Instruments and Services (Singapore) took part in the Observers program of the Coast Guard exercise held in Galveston, Texas. After the event, Mr. Low traveled to Illinois to visit the factory and get up to date with the latest Elastec/American Marine news.
Because Mr. Low has been a dealer for long enough to become a friend, he was greeted and hosted with great warmth and hospitality. It is not often that Singaporeans travel to rural areas and Mr. Low took full advantage of his journey to the Midwest by enjoying the local sights and activities. We at Elastec/American Marine, invite him to return anytime.

World's Largest Pipeline Company Buys Supermax II
Transneft, a Russian company with 47,000 kilometers (29,204 miles) of pipeline has purchased Supermax II. Transneft has two terminals under construction and several existing terminals at which Supermax II will be used to protect the environment during transfer and loading operations. Transneft purchased 3,600 meters (11,811 feet) of boom. Supermax II features a freeboard of 38 centimeters (15 inches) and an overall height of 107 centimeters (42 inches).

Special Boom Application
The Utah Strategic Alliance Harvesting Company bought 13,000 feet of boom for a special purpose. The company uses boom to harvest brine shrimp. It is a specially built boom that makes us wonder how the customer uses it. Boom division manager Jeff Pearce plans to visit the company during harvest to see for himself. There may be a way we can redesign the boom to improve performance.

Sand Snakes Help on Reef Project
Sand Snakes are long vinyl tubes filled with sand. They are used as portable weights to hold down tarp edges and the like. The National Park Service in Homestead Florida, uses our sand snakes for a special project on coral reefs. The weights hold down retaining nets that protect the tiny coral polyps until they are large enough to transplant in areas where the reef is damaged and needs to be rebuilt.

Success Story - a Winner in any Language
The latest recipient of an Elastec/American Marine 'Letter of Success' gift is Rodrigo Quiceno Arias from Ecuador. Rodrigo received a free radio for his letter written in Spanish. We don't know exactly what Rodrigo wrote, but we know what he is saying. No matter what language our customers speak, they all say the same thing. Elastec Skimmers do a great job and keep on working.

Elastec Boom Reels - Safety First
Elastec/American Marine boom reels are specially designed to provide our customers with a high quality reel that is safe to operate. Care and attention is paid to safety features including pinch points, braking systems and chain guards. Our in house engineering staff and fabricators have considered every aspect of reel quality and safety for our customers. The result is a range of boom reels in which we take pride.

New Catalogue Distribution
New Elastec/American Marine product brochures will soon be printed and on their way to dealers and other representatives. The new catalogue displays products and data from both manufacturing divisions. Now boom products and skimmer products are shown in the same, twelve page brochure. New brochures should arrive at relevant locations in the second half of October.

Large Orders Demand Efficiency
Both the skimmer division and the boom division of Elastec/American Marine have been inundated with large orders in the last few months. It requires a smooth running and efficient organization to see them through. Our skilled and dedicated work force has seen to it that containers filled with our products are sent to various parts of the world right on schedule.
